NZR bought a total of 146 of the Da class, in four different configurations or Phases. This is an etched brass kit of the Phase I unit (Original RoadNumbers 1400-1429, as supplied in 1955 from London, Ontario and La Grange,Illinois). The Prototype Phase I Da is basically an export model EMD G12 with 567 8 cylinder diesel. These Phase I units were in widespread use from their arrival until the 1980s. The kit has the front driver's side cab door welded shut, as quickly became standard practice with these units.
The last Phase I Da (number 1410) was withdrawn from service in 1988and is now preserved in operating condition at Steam Incorporated at Paekakariki(pronunciation: pie-cock-a-ree-kee, hence the affectionate "Pie-Cock").Of all the Da class, only 1471 (a Phase III unit) is still run by NZR inoriginal trim (in the "Heritage Fleet" based at Palmerston North). Da1471 still earns its keep running local shunts in the yard and as far afield as Marton and Levin.
Number 1429 has been preserved in operating condition at Pacific Rail Trust in Auckland, and Number 1431 (a Phase II unit built by Clyde in Australia) by Steam Incorporated at Paekakariki. These have both been leased back to Tranzrail and are in active service, trying to cover the drastic shortage of motive power at Tranzrail!
Class leader Da 1400 is on static display at the Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT) in Auckland.

NZR converted most (86 of 106) of the Phase III and IV Da Class locomotives to the new class Dc during the 1970s. The rebuild removed the high nose of the short hood and replaced it with a low nose and a new cab unit. The Dynamic Brake fans and louvres were moved aft of the new cab. The rest of the unit is cosmetically unaltered.
The Kit
This kit follows the same basic design as the Da kit...etched panels with white metal and brass castings. There are more castings than with the Da, so it is slightly easier to assemble. It still requires reasonable soldering ability..on our difficulty scale rated 7/10.
